Junior Program
๐ฅ Junior Program (Ages 5-13)
We teach jiu-jitsu as a martial art, not an activity. Our Junior Program brings together children of different ages in an intentional mixed-age environment that mirrors how martial arts have been taught historically.
What makes our approach different:
- Real jiu-jitsu techniques, not games or entertainment
- Mixed-age training where younger children learn by observing older students
- Children grouped by development and ability during drilling, not just by age
- Calm, disciplined instruction that respects children's capacity to learn
- High expectations with the support needed to succeed
Younger children (ages 5-9) focus on:

Frequently Asked Questions
Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Absolutely! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is perfect for adult beginners. Unlike striking arts, BJJ focuses on leverage and technique rather than strength, making it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. Our fundamentals classes are specifically designed for beginners, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you can learn effective self-defense techniques.
For meaningful progress, we recommend training 2-3 times per week minimum. Consistent training is more important than intensity. Many of our students train 4-5 times per week and see rapid improvement. The key is showing up consistently - even 2 times per week will yield significant results over time.
Not at all. You can and should be able to come as frequently as you want and your schedule allows you to do so. The only thing that changes is that if you come not as often, our graduation system is based on frequency - so you may delay your stripes and belts, which is totally okay. The way we walk this journey should be respectful to people's personal desires and availability.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective self-defense system available. The early UFC proved this definitively - Royce Gracie defeated much larger, stronger opponents using pure BJJ technique. It was designed to allow smaller, weaker individuals to defend against larger attackers using leverage and technique. Unlike striking arts, BJJ works in real-world scenarios where fights often go to the ground. You'll learn to control, submit, and escape from dangerous positions.
For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing - t-shirt, athletic shorts or pants, and bring a water bottle. If you don't have a gi, we can provide one for your first few classes. Once you decide to continue, we'll help you find the right gi. For No-Gi classes, a rash guard and athletic shorts work perfectly.
Blue belt typically takes 1-2 years of consistent training (2-3 times per week). This is when you transition from beginner to intermediate. However, focus on learning, not belts. The journey and the skills you develop are more valuable than any belt color. Every student progresses at their own pace.
BJJ will get you in shape! Many of our students started out of shape and transformed their fitness through training. BJJ provides excellent cardio, strength, and flexibility training. Start at your own pace - there's no pressure to keep up with anyone else. Your fitness will improve naturally as you train.
Junior Program โ Frequently Asked Questions
No.
It is serious about teaching, not about pressure.
Children are capable of focus, discipline, and learning real skills when expectations are clear. We teach calmly, patiently, and with respect โ but we do not dilute the art to entertain.
Most children actually enjoy being taken seriously.
Because games do not teach jiu-jitsu.
At Next Level, fun comes from:
- Learning real techniques
- Improving week after week
- Gaining confidence through competence
We use repetition, structure, and positional goals.
Enjoyment is a byproduct of progress โ not a substitute for it.
No.
Children are taught the same techniques at different depths.
Younger kids focus on:
- Movement
- Balance
- Position awareness
Older kids focus on:
- Detail
- Control
- Transitions
Your child is guided at their level while being exposed to real jiu-jitsu.
This is intentional.
Historically, martial arts were always taught in mixed-age environments. This allows:
- Younger children to learn faster by observing
- Older children to develop responsibility and leadership
- A stronger, calmer training environment
During drilling, children are grouped by development and ability โ not simply by age.
Yes โ safety is built into the structure.
We maintain:
- Close instructor supervision
- Controlled pairings
- Calm, disciplined training
- Immediate intervention when needed
Children are taught control before submissions and responsibility before resistance.
Yes โ real self-defense.
Jiu-jitsu teaches:
- Balance
- Control
- Escaping bad positions
- Staying calm under pressure
We focus on dominant positions, control, and awareness โ not aggression.
Belts and stripes are earned, not scheduled.
Progression is based on:
- Technical understanding
- Ability to execute fundamentals
- Proper behavior and discipline
There are no automatic promotions and no promotions based on attendance alone.
We respect previous training, but all students are evaluated by Next Level standards.
Belts represent skill and understanding.
If a child demonstrates that skill, it will be recognized.
If not, we build them properly โ without embarrassment.
Most children do โ and they do here.
But if a family is specifically looking for:
- A play-based program
- Entertainment-first classes
- Minimal structure
Next Level may not be the right fit.
We are very clear about what we do โ and why we do it.
Parents commonly notice:
- Improved focus
- Better listening skills
- Calm confidence
- Respect for structure
- Increased responsibility
These qualities come from learning something real โ not from being entertained.
We teach jiu-jitsu as a martial art, not an activity.
That means:
- No gimmicks
- No watered-down curriculum
- No fake progress
Just honest instruction, high standards, and real development.
"Children rise to the level of expectation placed on them."
At Next Level, we expect them to learn โ
and we give them everything they need to succeed.
